Religious Pilgrimages

Religion play important role in one’s life.  Believers of various religions often embark upon journeys to far off lands in order to seek better spirituality and purity of body, mind and soul.  Pakistan is an especially important site for Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist tourists as numerous religious sites related to Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism are located in the entire length and breadth of Pakistan.

In recent past, Government of Pakistan has decided to lift undue restriction for those who want to visit the country for visiting their religious places.  Online applications from such religious tourists are being entertained at Pakistan.

Opening of Karatarpur Corridor was a big step in fulfilling the commitment of the Pakistan for easing out the process for Indian Sikhs.   Now Indian Sikhs can visit the Kartarpura Sahib without getting into the hassle of Passport and visa.  They only need their Identity Card issued by India and they have to apply a few days before coming to Kartarpura Sahib.   Elaborate arrangements have been made by India and Pakistan to register all those who cross Indo-Pak border every day to come on one day trip to their holiest place.

Another revered place of Sikhs is the city of Nankana Sahib which is  the Birth place  of their first  Guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak, who was born in the city and first began preaching here. Nankana Sahib is the most important religious site for the Sikh religion.   Gurdawara Panja Sahib at Hassan Abdal is also another revered place for Sikhs around the world.  Sikh Community living in India and elsewhere is always eager to come visit these holy places.

Arrangements similar to Kartarpur Corridor were expected to put in place for Indian Hindus who wanted to come to the “Valley of Sharda”  located in Azad Kashmir just a few kilometers from Line of Control.  However, recent developments in India Occupied Kashmir and in India have halted the process for the time being.

Another very revered Hindu religion destination is Mandars of “Raj Katas” located in Pakistan.   Many Hindus from India and other countries wish to visit this place and due to new policies of Pakistan, it will become easy to plan and visit this place.  These revered places await for the eager pilgrims.

Buddhism in Pakistan took root some 2,300 years ago.    There are 500 million Buddhist around the world. Pakistan’s Gandhara region comprising Mardan, Taxila and Swat holds a special place for them. Korean Buddhists in particular trace their religious origin to the area that is now Pakistan, where Korean monk Hyecho travelled 1,300 years ago.

Just recently, a 48-feet-long Buddha was also unearthed in Haripur, making it the world’s oldest sleeping Buddha statue.   Takht-i-Bahi and Swat in KP Province and the sites in Northern Areas specially Gilgit-Baltistan region await for the visits of  Mahayana Buddhists in Korea, China, Japan and elsewhere.
