Northern Areas

Pakistan is one of the few countries those are blessed with dynamic landscapes,  rivers, deserts, lakes, waterfalls, springs, glaciers in great abundance.

The northern part of Pakistan, also called Gilgit-Baltistan, is known for its scenic beauty, tall mountains and cold climate. These very attributes have draw tourists from across the world to the region for more than a century.

Gilgit-Baltistan covers an area of over 72,971 km²   and is highly mountainous. It had an estimated population of 1,800,000 in 2015.  Its capital city is Gilgit (population 216,760 est). Gilgit-Baltistan is home to five of the “eight-thousanders” and more than fifty peaks above 7,000 metres . Three of the world’s longest glaciers outside the Polar Regions are found in Gilgit-Baltistan. The main tourism activities are trekking and mountaineering, and this industry is growing in importance with every passing year.

 

Some of the famous/must visit places the region are as under :-

Fairy Meadows. A German Climber named this place as Fairy Meadows. The mightiness and splendour of Fairy Meadows enchants back packers, climbers, wildlife researchers, photographers, painters & geologists, besides nature lovers alike. Fairy Meadows has been a source of enchantment since long for back packers, climbers, wildlife researchers, photographers, painters & geologists, besides nature lovers. 

Gilgit.   Gilgit is capital city of Northern Region of Pakistan.  It can be reached via PIA flights or KKH which passes from 10 kilometers from the city.   It is an historical and old city.   There are numerous attractions for a tourist in this city and surrounding valleys mainly Naltar and Phandar Vallyes. 

Hunza.  Hunza is one of the most amazing places on Planet Earth.  It is also called as Heaven on the Earth.  Surrounded by grand Himalayas and the Karakoram mountain ranges, this place has been a great tourist attraction.  Karimabad Town is the Headquarters of this District Hunza.  Baltit and Altit Forts alongwith Eaglenest are must visit places of Karimabad.  Rakaposhi Mountain dominates the skyline of Hunza and is visible from everywhere. 

Skardu is a town is the capital of Baltistan situated  2,438 metres above sea level in the backdrop of the great peaks of the Karakoram Range of mountains.  Local Balti people are a mixture of Tibetan and Caucasian stock and speak Balti language which is  an ancient form of Tibetan. Due to the similarity of its culture, lifestyle and architecture with Tibet, Baltistan is also known as the “Tibet-e-Khurd” (Little Tibet).

It borders on the Chinese province of Xinjiang and Indian Kashmir. The tourist season is from April to October. The maximum temperature is 27 C and minimum (October) 8 C. Apart from its incomparable cluster of mountain peaks and glaciers Baltistan’s five valleys, – Shigar, Skardu, Khaplu, Rondu and Kharmang are noted for their luscious peaches, apricots, apples and pears.

 

Shighar.    it is one of the most beautiful valleys of Skardu Region. Shigar valley is 23km away from the Town of Skardu which take  40 to 50 minutes on jeep or taxi-car.  Mighty Shigar River flows through the valley and provide irrigation for the whole region.   This valley is also known as “the gateway to the mighty mountain of Karakorum”.   One of the tourists attractions is the Shigar Fort, which was in fact, the  residence of native ruler. A wooden Masjid built by a Kashmiri carpenter is also worth seeing.   Zharba or Blind lake is another attraction in the Area.
